Spring Career Fairs: Where to Catch Us

Earlier this month, we had a blast meeting ambitious Ducks and Beavers at the University of Oregon and Oregon State University Winter Career Fairs and Expos. Now that winter in Portland is slowly coming to a close, we’re gearing up for our next round of career fairs in the spring! In this edition of the AIFP blog, get details on the career fairs we’ll be attending, how to prepare, and what we’re looking for in new hires.

Upcoming Career Fairs: April’s a Big Month!

As far as career fairs are concerned, spring is going to be a busy time!

April 18th, 2018 – noon – 4 p.m. in the EMU Ballroom

Catch us at the University of Oregon Career Fair! Meet current traders and company leaders, get a sense of our company culture, and have the opportunity to network. In addition to us, you’ll meet a host of different Oregon-based companies who are hiring.

April 25th, 2018 – 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 pm. at the Main Career Center

Catch us at the Oregon State University Spring Career Expo! Just like at the University of Oregon Career Fair, students will have the opportunity to meet current traders, ask questions about what it’s like to build a career as a trader, and learn all about our company culture and values.

May 1st, 2018 – 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 pm. in the SMSU Ballroom, 3rd Floor

Catch us at Portland State University for this on-campus recruiting event, which brings over 80 employers from a wide variety of industries. We'd love to meet you and talk about our available opportunities.

What We Look For

What we’re really looking for in recruits is a unique combination of grit, determination, persistence, work ethic, perseverance, creativity, and energy. Being a trader at AIFP is like being able to run your own small business, so creativity, independence, and strong worth ethic are all the kinds of valuable qualities we look for.

Tips for Preparing for a Fair

Below, we’re listing a few tips on how to prepare for your next career fair!

• First, come with an open mind. You can never really know which company or opportunity is going to jump out at you!
• Secondly, come with questions. Do a little research about prospective employers before you arrive, and be prepared to ask some specific questions about their business, career opportunities, and goals!
• Bring copies of your resume. If you really hit it if off with an employer, you’ll want to be able to follow up with them in the future. In addition to making a positive in-person impression, handing off a polished resume will leave a lasting impression—and provide them with something to look back on as a reference should you apply for a job.
• Dress professionally and be polite. You’ll want to put your best foot forward and be prepared to interact with employers on a personable, professional level.
• Leave extra time to chat. Don’t rush the process, and return between classes if you can.
• Ask for the employer’s card or contact information. If you’re really interested in a position, you’ll want to get the employer’s contact information and follow up with a thank you e-mail.
